Woman fined 150,000 naira for running job scam

The Kaduna High Court fined Hauwa Nasiru Garba, 33, who was taken to court by the Economic and Crime Commission for running a job scam. She was fined one hundred and fifty thousand naira for impersonation and cheating by posing as a military official.

Justice M.T.M Aliyu of the Kaduna State High Court, Kaduna, convicted one Hauwa Nasiru Garba of impersonation charges on Thursday, July 15, 2021.

The charge against the defendant reads, “that you, Hauwa Nasiru Garba, female,” sometime in 2019, in Kaduna, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, did commit an offence, namely cheating by impersonation, when you pretended to be a Military Officer and dishonestly induced Mohammed Idris to deliver to you the sum of Sixty Seven Thousand Naira (N67,000.00), thereby committing an offence.”

Following a plea deal with the prosecution, she pled guilty to the crime and was convicted. Justice Aliyu fined her one hundred fifty thousand naira (N150, 000.00). The court also ordered her to pay the victim 67, 000 Naira (N67, 000.00) in restitution. The 33-year-old felon had been posing as a military official in order to scam unsuspecting individuals by promising to assist them in enlisting in the armed forces.

Hauwa’s luck ran out when the Commission received a petition from one Mohammed Idris alleging that the convict induced him to pay the sum of sixty-seven thousand naira (N67,000.00) into her account with the promise that she would help him secure employment with the Nigerian Army or Air Force, a promise she failed to keep. And the complainant’s efforts to retrieve his money were all in vain.
