Nigeria recalls ambassador from Indonesia over assaulted diplomat.
Nigeria has officially recalled its ambassador to Indonesia has a result of the assault of a Nigerian diplomat by Indonesian immigration officers.
Geoffrey Onyema, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced this on Wednesday in Abuja. After sending an official protest to the Indonesian government on the abuse of a Nigeria diplomat in Indonesia.
The Nigerian Ambassador in Indonesia had earlier submitted a detailed report on the manhandling and detention of a Nigerian diplomat to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Indonesian Ambassador was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to voice his shock and strong complaint.
The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a statement on Tuesday, signed by Esther Sunsuwa, its spokesperson (Mrs). Following the study of the Nigerian Ambassador’s report, the government stated that “the Nigerian Government strongly condemns what is effectively an egregious act of international delinquency by Indonesian State actors against an accredited representative of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, with no justification and in violation of international law.”
The Nigerian government has demanded adequate consequences against the authorities in question and has summoned its ambassador to Indonesia for consultations, including a review of bilateral ties.
Nigeria’s government summoned Indonesia’s ambassador. On behalf of the Indonesian government, he presented an explanation of what he believed had occurred and apologized unequivocally.
The Nigerian foreign affairs Minister said “As soon as we saw the video on social media, we called our Ambassador in Indonesia, who provided us a more detailed explanation of what happened,” he added.
Nigeria, however, sent an official protest to the Indonesian government. “The Nigerian Ambassador has confirmed that the immigration officers involved have since gone to the Nigerian Embassy to apologize to the Ambassador and the diplomat involved,” according to the statement.
But, the Nigeria government is obviously not happy with the response of the Indonesian government. Diplomats are infallible under international law. This is blatantly in violation of the Vienna Convention.”
According to Onyema, the Federal Government summoned the envoy to inform him of the country’s unhappiness with the official’s assault.
The foreign affairs office said the video was taken in the office by a Nigerian ambassador. This appears to have occurred during an unannounced search by Indonesian immigration of illegal and irregular migrants in their nation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs underlines its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s and Nigerians’ interests wherever they may be in the globe, and urges patience as talks continue.
