Nigeria And Russia Sign Military Cooperation Agreement

Nigeria and the Russian Federation have signed a Military-Technical Cooperation Agreement. The Honourable Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Salihi MAGASHI (Rtd), who is on an official visit to Russiaa on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, signed on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, while Dmitry Shugaev, Director of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, signed on behalf of the Russian Federation.

The Nigerian Ambassador to the Russian Federation, His Excellency (Prof.) Abdullahi Y. SHEHU, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Auwal Zubairu GAMBO, the Defence Attache in the Embassy of Nigeria in Moscow, Air Vice Marshal Olatokunbo ADESANYA, representatives of the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force, and other sat in on the signing ceremony on August 23, 2021.

According to the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Embassy in Moscow, this Agreement replaces the previous agreement signed between the two countries on March 6, 2001. In a brief remark following the signing ceremony, Ambassador SHEHU extended gratitude to the Russian authorities and reaffirmed that Nigeria is seeking complementarity and mutual benefits rather than alternatives. In a related development, President Vladimir PUTIN of Russia stated on the sidelines of the 7th International Military-Technical Forum-Army 2021 on August 23, 2021, that “massive mutually beneficial portfolios of contracts for the supply of Russian military goods are concluded on the forum’s sidelines every year.”

According to President PUTIN, over 28,000 units of modern military armaments and equipment, ranging from tiny firearms to artillery, tanks, and military combat aircraft, are on display at the forum.
