Lalong orders arrest of farm crops destroyers in plateau state
Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong has ordered the arrest of those responsible for the destruction of farm crops in Kpachudu and Jebbu Miango in the Basso Local Government Area.
The Governor stated this in a press release signed by Dr. Makut Simon Macham, the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor of Plateau State, on July 21, 2021.
The reported willful destruction of farm crops in some communities in the State by yet to be apprehended criminals was described as callous, criminal, inhuman, and wicked by Governor Simon Bako Lalong.
While reacting to the heinous development, Governor Lalong stated that it is unfathomable that people would go into a farm and mow down flourishing crops that are nearing maturity and expected to be harvested in the coming weeks and months for whatever reason.
Remember that earlier today, there were reports of massive crop destruction? A large area of cultivated farmlands in Plateau State’s Kpachudu community, Jebbu Miango in Irigwe chiefdom, Bassa local government area, was destroyed.
This has been going on for about a month. Maize, soya beans, potatoes, peppers, and other crops grown on various hectares of farmland have been destroyed in many communities across the State’s Riyom, Barkin Ladi, Jos South, and Bassa local government areas, causing farmers to lose millions of Naira.
According to Governor Lalong, this is a deliberate act that must be addressed. ‘The recent case of such intentional decimation of farm crops in Kpachudu, Jebbu Miango in Basso Local Government area is totally condemnable and unacceptable,’ Lalong said.
“According to reports, this is a carefully planned and executed act that is not only meant to provoke crisis, suspicion, and instability in the area, but also to render the victims poor and hungry.” “What these criminals fail to understand is that such actions will eventually leave the entire State and country with food shortages, from which even the perpetrators will not escape.”
As a result, the Governor directs the security agencies to immediately go into action by farm, basso, plateau statesimon bako llalongconducting a thorough investigation into this terrorist activity with the goal of apprehending and prosecuting those responsible. The government, in collaboration with security agencies, will do everything in its power to identify and prosecute those responsible for this heinous act.
In addition to directing security agencies to investigate the incident and apprehend the perpetrators, the Governor has directed the Plateau Peace Building Agency to visit the affected areas and assess the extent of damage, as well as foster dialogue within the communities, to ensure that such incidents do not occur again.
The Governor also wants community associations, traditional rulers, youth groups, and vigilante platforms across the state to be proactive in providing intelligence to security agencies in order to pre-empt and foil such plans, as well as arresting perpetrators who are clearly on a mission to return Plateau to the era of pain and agony.
The Governor expresses sympathy for the farmers and promises that the government will do everything possible to ensure that they receive justice.
