Governor Udom orders a review of Ekpo Iniobong’s expulsion
The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has approved the constitution of a five-man panel to review the remote and immediate cause of the action that led to the expulsion of final year students of the Faculty of Engineering, Akwa Ibom State University; Ekpo, Iniobong. and submit its report immediately. The panel is to be headed by the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet.
The governor stated this following reports of the dismissal of the students by the Senate of the institution. The student was expelled based on an allegation of gross misconduct levied against him by the school authorities.
Governor Udom Emmanuel, meanwhile, denied the allegation that he had authorized the expulsion. In a press statement signed by Ekerete Udoh, the media aide to Governor Udom, they called it the work of mischief makers. He blamed the allegation that he ordered Iniobong’s expulsion on miscreants who maliciously attempted to link the university’s action to His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel’s visit to Akwa Ibom State University.
According to the press release, the Governor, Udom Emmanuel, was not aware of Iniobong’s expulsion, as such a matter had not previously been brought to his attention. “We have read various reports, primarily on social media, concerning administrative sanctions allegedly imposed by the management of Akwa State University (AKSU) against one of its students, Iniobong Ekpo, resulting in his expulsion from the university,” he said.
The Premium Times had earlier reported that Iniobong, a final year student in the Agricultural Engineering department, wrote an article on Facebook against the Governor. Using his pseudonym, Afrosix Jaara, he criticized the Governor for not honouring the promises he made to the school about five years ago.
The governor has promised cash rewards to some of the school’s graduating students in 2017.
According to the student, he had yet to fulfill the promise.
According to Iniobong, this action resulted in a suspension before his expulsion from the school was confirmed.
The school authorities have described his actions as unacceptable and a violation of his matriculation oath.
In the meantime, the Akwa Ibom Government has described the Governor of the State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, as an apostle of freedom of expression. It advised the students of Akwa Ibom State University to be law-abiding and go about their normal academic activities without any fear of harassment.
