Messi: Nigeria is my toughest African opponent


Amazingly. That Barcelona “voice on the field” and Argentina’s global football icon, Lionel Messi, has acknowledged the fact that the only African country which strives with him critically on the field is Nigeria.

The 34-year-old experienced and talented game-baller picked the Super Eagles as one of the difficult teams he had faced at the International level, having gone into a different leg-modulations with the Giant of Africa in three World Cups in the year 2010, 2014 and 2018, with three goals from these meetings including a brace in the 2014 game.

Also, Messi faced Nigeria at the U20 level wherein his brace from the spot in the final helped Argentina to triumph over Nigeria and at the Olympics in Beijing he assisting the winning goal scored by Angel Di Maria to hand his team a gold.

Speaking on the backdrop of his recent Copa America feat with Argentina, the football legend was asked about the teams which he has faced from all continents and what derivation he made of them. In Africa, he picked Nigeria.

“If I would have to pick, it’s Nigeria. I picked Nigeria, because it’s always intense. They are a physical, skillful and unpredictable side. Never easy to get pass them even though we have edged over them in recent games.” he said.
